Pregnancy Massage

Also known as prenatal massage, is a therapeutic bodywork tailored specifically to the needs of pregnant women. It is designed to provide relaxation, relieve common pregnancy discomforts, and promote overall well-being during pregnancy. Here's an overview:

Overview

Purpose

Technique

  • Relaxation: Pregnancy can be physically and emotionally taxing, and massage helps to relax tense muscles and promote overall relaxation.

  • Pain Relief: It can alleviate common pregnancy discomforts such as back pain, joint pain, leg cramps, and headaches.

  • Improved Sleep: Better sleep quality can often result from a prenatal massage.

  • Stress Reduction: Massage can help reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being during pregnancy.

  • Pregnancy-Safe Positions: Prenatal massage is typically done with the woman lying on her side, supported by pillows. This position is comfortable and safe for both the mother and the baby.  Here at Maitland Massage, we have also gone to great expense to have a special table that allows ladies to now be able to lay face down with full support and a "Baby Bump" cut out to keep the womb fully supported.  (See Photos on this page)
Gentle Pressure: The massage therapist uses gentle pressure and adjusts techniques to accommodate the pregnant woman's needs and comfort level.
Focus on Key Areas: Common areas of focus include the lower back, hips, legs, and feet, which can experience increased stress and discomfort during pregnancy.
Specialised Strokes: Techniques such as Swedish massage, which involves long strokes, kneading, and circular movements, are commonly used.
Avoidance of Certain Areas: Pressure points on the ankles and wrists are generally avoided, as these can potentially stimulate uterine contractions.
Use of Pillows: Pillows are often used for support and comfort, allowing the woman to relax fully.  At Maitland Massage Therapy Centre , we have custom made pregnancy toppers so you can even lay face down in complete comfort.

Getting a Pregnancy Massage

Prenatal massages are generally safe after the first trimester, but it's always recommended to consult with a healthcare provider before beginning any massage therapy during pregnancy.
Some conditions, such as pre-eclampsia or a high-risk pregnancy, may warrant avoiding massage or require specific modifications.

How to Get a Pregnancy Massage
