Body Assessment

During a body assessment using goniometry, the use of a goniometer, which is a tool used to measure the range of motion in joints, plays a vital role. A standardised set of range of motion angles for each joint in the body gives us reference to how your body measurements meet the guidelines of peak performance.

  • The individual undergoing the assessment would be asked to wear appropriate clothing that allows access to the joints being assessed. The room is well-lit and provides enough space for movement.

  • We will explain the process to the individual, ensuring they understand what will happen and addressing any concerns or questions.

  • We then systematically assess each joint of interest using the goniometer. This might include joints such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle, among others.

  • The goniometer is placed over the joint, with its arms aligned along the boney landmarks of the adjacent segments.  We then move the joint through its range of motion while observing and measuring the angle formed by the goniometer.

  • The measurements are recorded for each joint assessed and compared to the standards. This documentation helps track progress over time, identify asymmetries or limitations, and inform treatment planning.

  • After completing the assessment, we interpret the measurements to identify any restrictions in range of motion, joint stiffness, or other issues that may require intervention or further evaluation.

Overall, a goniometric assessment provides valuable information about an individual's joint mobility and function, which can be essential for designing personalised treatment plans, monitoring progress, and optimising physical performance.
